Martin Luther

16th century reformer, Martin Luther.Lutherans base their beliefs on the teachings of Martin Luther, a 16th-century priest who had no idea he was starting a denomination when he was just trying to reform the church.

His reforms were based on a then-radical idea that human beings could do nothing to “earn” God’s grace – grace ia a gift freely given, available to all through the act of faith.  This doctrine became known as “justification by grace through faith.”
